Alien Registration Card (외국인등록증/ARC) — The Must-Do Within Your First 90 Days in Korea

If you are staying in Korea for more than 90 days, you must register as a foreign resident within 90 days of your arrival. The Alien Registration Card (외국인등록증/ARC) is your official ID in Korea — you'll need it for almost everything: opening a bank account, getting a phone plan, and visiting hospitals.

Where do I apply?

• At the Immigration Office (출입국·외국인청) that covers your area of residence.
• You must book a visit in advance on HiKorea (www.hikorea.go.kr). Walk-ins are often turned away.

What to bring

• Passport
• 1 passport photo (3.5cm × 4.5cm, white background, taken within 6 months)
• Integrated application form (available at the office, or download it from HiKorea)
• 30,000 KRW fee
• Additional documents depending on your visa type (students: certificate of enrollment; workers: employment contract, etc.)

How long does it take?

• Usually 3–6 weeks from application to receiving your card.
• Choose mail delivery when applying and you won't need to return to the office.

Important things to know

• Missing the 90-day deadline means a fine. The safest move is to book your appointment right after arriving.
• If you move, you must report your change of address within 14 days.
• You should carry your ARC at all times; if you lose it, apply for reissuance.
